DIGELAR muzium hidup terbesar dunia, Kampung Budaya Sarawak menjadi destinasi mesti dikunjungi untuk mereka yang pertama kali menjejakkan kaki ke negeri Bumi Kenyalang ini.Apa yang menanti pengunjung di taman seluas 4.25 hektar ini adalah kediaman tradisional tujuh suku kaum utama iaitu Bidayuh, Iban, Orang Ulu, Penan, Melanau, Melayu dan Cina. Setiap satunya memaparkan keunikan cara hidup dan budaya suku kaum utama Sarawak.Be rlatarbelakangkan pemandangan indah Gunung Santubong, siapa sangka taman yang sudah mengungguli pelbagai anugerah di peringkat antarabangsa, dibangunkan di kawasan perkampungan nelayan dan hutan belantara.Di pintu masuk, tetamu akan disambut dengan beberapa patung menggambarkan kepercayaan warisan pelbagai suku kaum yang dipaparkan di taman ini. Pengunjung turut dibekalkan dengan pasport khas yang akan dicop setiap kali selesai mengunjungi setiap rumah.Rumah Bidayuh misalnya kelihatan seakan pondok besar berbentuk bulat. Kaum yang asalnya menetap di tebing Sungai Sadong dan Sungai Sarawak ini gemar membuat rumah di lereng bukit sehingga kelihatan seperti tangga gergasi.Selain mengurangkan risiko serangan musuh, tangga gergasi itu memberi kelebihan untuk mengumpul air dari bukit. Empangan kecil pula dibina untuk menyalurkan air ke perkampungan suku kaum ini menggunakan buluh.Kaum Iban atau nama lainnya Dayak Laut membina rumah panjang yang boleh bertahan antara 15 hingga 20 tahun. Mereka hanya berpindah apabila tanah di sekeliling rumah panjang mereka mula mendap atau kurang subur.Rumah orang Iban dibina menggunakan balak dengan daun sebagai atap. Menariknya, rumah yang lazimnya dibina berhampiran sungai ini memiliki koridor yang panjang di bawah satu bumbung.Koridor atau beranda luar ini menjadi tempat pertemuan antara penghuninya. Pengunjung ke rumah Iban di taman ini berpeluang menyaksikan demonstrasi menenun pua kumbu secara tradisional yang diwarisi sejak berzaman.Rumah Penan pula boleh diibaratkan sebagai pondok sejajar dengan kehidupan mereka yang gemar berpindah-randah. Pondok kecil dan amat praktikal ini dibina untuk bertahan beberapa minggu atau bulan yang lazimnya didirikan berhampiran sagu liar.Suku kaum yang agak pemalu ini mewarisi pelbagai kelebihan termasuk menghasilkan Bunga Jarau berguna untuk menghasilkan api. Bagaimanapun, mereka juga terkenal dengan seni penghasilan sumpit yang digunakan sebagai senjata perburuan atau digunakan ketika berperang.Rumah Melanau antara kediaman peribumi Sarawak paling menyerlah kerana dibina 40 kaki dari tanah. Tujuan utama adalah mengekang serangan musuh dan mengelak banjir. Menariknya, kaum yang asalnya menetap berhampiran kawasan pinggir pantai ini menjadikan sagu sebagai makanan utama berbanding nasi.Kepenatan memanjat tangga kayu pasti terubat apabila menyaksikan hasil seni kaum ini yang menjadi latar dinding di beranda rumah suku kaum ini. Pengunjung juga berpeluang menyaksikan orang Melanau mengalunkan irama tradisional menggunakan sape, alat muzik kebanggaan mereka.Orang Ulu pula seperti namanya, gemar membina penempatan berselerak di tanah tinggi dan di tebing sungai utama. Bagaimanapun, kaum yang menjadikan pertanian sebagai sumber makanan ini membina rumah panjang mereka supaya tahan untuk tempoh yang lama.Orang Ulu juga terkenal kerana kehalusan seni pertukangan pedang yang dicemburui musuh mereka. Mereka menghasilkannya daripada besi yang didapati dari sekitar kawasan penempatan yang kemudian disejukkan dengan air sejuk pergunungan.Seb elum pulang, jangan lupa singgah di panggung Kampung Budaya Sarawak untuk melihat keunikan tarian masyarakatnya termasuk Ngajat Lesong dan Ngajat Pahlawan (Iban), iaitu meraikan wira yang ingin ke medan perang.Alunan irama daripada alat muzik etnik dengan wajah manis gadis menari diselang-selikan dengan demonstrasi menyumpit, turut disertai pelancong asing. Paling teruja melihat wajah gerun 'pahlawan' menggigit lesung tanpa berasa sakit.

SARAWAK CAKE
Kek Lapis Sarawak yang mula dipopularkan pada akhir 80-an (walaupun asal usulnya lebih lama) mempunyai keunikan tersendiri berbanding kek tradisional yang lain. Ia digemari sehingga mereka yang datang berkunjung ke Sarawak tidak akan melepaskan peluang untuk membawa pulang kek lapis sarawak sebagai buah tangan. Antara ciri ciri kek lapis sarawak ini:
- Berwarna warni. Minimum 2 warna berlainan (selalunya lebih)- Tekstur kek kemas dan kukuh- Menggunakan lebih telur berbanding kek biasa- Mengambil masa yang panjang dan memerlukan kesabaran- Tahan lama, sehingga berbulan bulan

My Unique Food "UMAI"

Today I want to share with you all about my ethnic food that we call “UMAI”. This food is very simply and delicious. Like Japan popular raw fish food “sushi”, Umai is also same way.
Umai is a raw fish salad popular among various ethnic groups of Sarawak, especially the Melanaus. In fact, umai is a traditional working lunch for the Melanau fishermen.Umai is prepared raw from freshly caught fish, iced but not frozen. Main species used include Mackerel, Bawal Hitam and Umpirang.
It is made mainly of thin slivers of raw fish, thinly sliced onions, chili, salt and the juice of sour fruits like lime or assam. It is usually accompanied by a bowl of toasted sago pearls instead of rice.
if you all come to Sarawak i suggest try this food, there is plenty of unique food in sarawak based on ethnic like Ayam pansuh is Iban And Bidayuh popular food.
To prepare umai is very simply:
50 gm mackerel
250 gm lime juice
75 gm lime juice local
25 gm salt
15 gm pepper
75 gm shallots
40 gm ginger
25 gm red chilies blended
50 gm prawn paste
15 gm Garlic
20 gm Turmeric fresh
Instructions:

1. Slice the Mackerel fillet thinly and keep dry with a piece of cloth.
2. Marinate with the lime juice for 4 - 5 hours.
3. Drain off the lime juice and toss with blended ingredients.
Then, add in local lime juice and mix well (if local lime is not available, substitute with ordinary lime juice).
